PRAISE ALFIE!!!!!

no question he gets in the HHOF. not only did he have a great NHL career (better than others that are currently in the hall), his international record is just as good.

Its not the NHL Hall of Fame .... its the Hockey Hall of Fame, so both need to be considered.

PRAISE ALFIE!!!!!

ya .... kinda like Doug Gilmour .....

This is precisely who I was thinking of when I said similar players are in the hall.

Doug Gilmour 1474 GP, 450 G, 964 A, 1414 pts, .959 PPG
Alfie 1246 GP, 444 G, 713 A, 1157 pts, .929 PPG

Fair point, for sure. Though I would argue that, at their respective peaks, Gilmour was the superior player. He finished second in Hart Trophy voting in '93. Alfredsson was never among the top five players in the game

He will get in, probably not a first ballot guy. But he will get in eventually.

thank ALFIE you aren't trolling .....

first ...... I love Dougie to death (best 2 way hockey player in the world )

Alfie won the Calder, The King Clancy and the Messier trophies in his career.

Dougie has a Cup (albeit in a supporting role in Calgary) and I think he was on a winning Canada Cup team??? Alfie has the international trophies and a Cup final....

I tried to find internationalal info on both of them, but came up blank....

Alfie will get in the HHOF. One of the top PPG players for the dead puck era. Calder trophy, Mark Messier leadership award, Olympic gold, plus other awards. Face of the franchise for over 10 years. It's just a matter of time...

Ahhh...I forgot that any opposing opinion is immediately considered "trolling". My apologies...

The Messier Award is a joke, first of all. How do you quantify someone's leadership abilities? And Mark Messier is the most overrated leader of all time. But I'm not gonna get into that now

I watched that Calgary cup win, and Dougie was NOT a supporting player. Anyone who watched that series will tell you that he deserved the Conn Smythe over Al MacInnis

Both solid players with long, productive careers. Dougie probably stuck around a few years too long, but his best years were better than Alfie's best years. That's the point I'm trying to make

I always judge players based on their absolute peaks. Longevity is overrated. Which is why I think Bure and Lindros should both be in, and Connor McDavid should win the Calder in a landslide

I'm probably in the minority, but I don't think Alfie will get into the Hall anytime soon. I'm probably the biggest Alfie fan out there, but his "peak" was relatively short lived from 06-08 (stupid lockout probably cost him a 90 point year). He was always consistency good and had many clutch moments but he was not necessarily consistency great (besides his peak seasons). He was never considered an elite top 5 player during his playing days, even during his peak.

He could definitely get in during a weak induction year, but so could 10 or so other guys with similar careers (Lindros, Roenick, Rechi, Andreychuck, Kariya, etc).

He had an amazing career and contributed internationally as well, but not sure it's enough to guarantee his spot in the Hall. I hope he gets in. Would be a great accomplishment and first for the Senators (modern day).

Meh, Sundin was pretty borderline himself, and he was better than Alfredsson.

Any Swedish hockey fan will tell you that.

Don't forget the two names that have been brought up - Sundin and Gilmour - both played in the Mecca - that is why I question whether Alfie gets in with similar numbers but far less exposure. (EDIT: And Pat Quinn was a big voice on the selection committee)

Alfie didn't wear the blue sweater. Helps immensely to get in. Gilmour too. Should those guys have gotten in and so quickly? Not sure. My opinion is no (on getting in so quickly). Great careers, but not sure they are Hall of Fame worthy. Alfie is in the same mix, but doesn't have the Toronto gurus with him. If anything, they are likely against him getting in.

There's probably some truth to that. The comparison to Sundin isn't overly relevant (even the most loyal Sens fan on earth would admit that Alfie is nowhere near Mats' level), but I'm sure the link to Toronto has helped to expedite the HHOF selection process in the past

I mean, just look at the way Jeter is treated in the baseball community. Never a top five player in the league, below-average defensively, never hit for power, yet he's treated like the second coming of Babe Ruth. There are dozens of superior players who'll never be uttered in the same breath as Jeter, simply because they played in Milwaukee, or Cincy

So yeah, playing in the league's biggest market will always help

There is no trolling, there is just point blank wrong judgements...this is one of them. The Messier Award is one of the most important awards in the sport? Was is better than to measure leadership. Skill is good, hockey intelligence is also equally as good and leadership is as important as skill and hockey intelligence. So the NHL would only measure people that can score, then you would only be rewarding one third of what makes the NHL great. As per your train of thoughts, players like Toews, Kopitar, Backes should never even be considered top tier players because they were never in top 5 scoring. If you would know anything your talking about, you would come to realize that the NHL and hockey world today is no where close to where it was before...many things have changed, most noticeably socring has gone down quite a lot so players make less points. So you can't compare older players to newer players because the fundamental analytic components of the sport have changed since 10 years ago.

As for Dougie, he was great, but Alfie was also great because he was just a pure leader, something that Dougie didn't have as much. So the difference in the points per game are defenitely caught up and overacheive by the leadership skills Alfie brought to enable his entire team, rather than just scoring and playing good D. Both amazing players, but you can't compare all numbers, and that's when leadership assessments are important.

Alfie was a highly respected member of the NHLPA during a time of great labour relations tension. His leadership and calmness in the face of adversity will measure well among players and voters on the HHOF panel.

That is silly, he never captained the Canadiens.
